Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
No. Unlike deep tissue or sports massage, MLD uses extremely light, gentle, and rhythmic skin-stretching movements. Because lymphatic vessels lie just beneath the surface of the skin, firm pressure actually flattens the tiny capillary valves and blocks fluid flow rather than encouraging it. Most clients find MLD deeply relaxing, and many even fall asleep during their session.
In many cases, gentle post-operative MLD can begin as early as 24 to 48 hours after surgery, provided your surgeon gives clearance. Early intervention helps prevent severe fluid accumulation, reduces bruising, and minimizes the risk of hard tissue formation (fibrosis). Always check with your surgical team, and we will tailor your treatment intensity based on your specific stage of healing.
While many clients notice reduced tightness and less visible swelling after a single session, optimal results require a series of treatments. Post-surgery recovery: A series of 5 to 10 sessions (often 2–3 times per week initially) is typically recommended. Chronic conditions or general wellness: Maintenance sessions every 2 to 4 weeks help sustain fluid balance and immune support.
Hydrate generously: Drink plenty of water before and after your appointment. MLD mobilizes fluid and metabolic waste, and proper hydration helps your kidneys flush these out efficiently. Wear comfortable clothing: Loose-fitting clothes prevent restrictive pressure on your lymphatic pathways right after treatment. Rest up: Allow your body time to rest following your session, as mild tiredness is normal as your system processes cleared fluid.
While MLD is extremely safe for most people, there are a few medical conditions where it is contraindicated. MLD is not recommended for individuals experiencing active systemic infections, acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT), congestive heart failure, or severe kidney failure. If you have an active health condition, we will review your medical intake during your initial consultation to ensure MLD is safe for you.
